Within minutes of meeting Suzanne and Dylan, I felt like I'd been friends with them for years. They have warm manners and open hearts, and they are quick to share a laugh or a lovely story. It's clear that in each other, they have found both love and a kindred spirit connection. As we walked around Ottawa together, I loved hearing about their large and loving families, their dachshund, Parker and their dreams for their wedding. It was also cool to discover that Suzanne is a fellow Sherlock fan, as we compared the themed lock screens on our phones.

Suzanne and Dylan, thank you for giving me the opportunity to commemorate your engagement. I loved getting to know you both and I sincerely hope you'll stay in touch! I wish you all the best in your planning and hope that your destination wedding is beautiful in every way.

We began our shoot in Ottawa's Byward Market, where they first met. There is something very powerful about coming full circle to where something began, returning to the place where an interest was born and two lives started to be knit together.

When Suzanne and I were corresponding via email to plan their engagement session, we were discussing possible locations. I always encourage couples to choose a place that has some special significance to them. As I already mentioned, we began in the place where they first encountered each other, but in this excerpt from our email exchange, Suzanne explains why they chose their second location:

Dylan and I are First Nations and there is a spot that is very special to us. It's called Victoria Island. It's traditional Algonquin Territory and if we were going to have a wedding here in Ottawa, it would have been there. There is a little spot on the island that has a tipi and some other cultural items around it. It's right along the river and in the background you can see Parliament. It's very beautiful there.

2014 highlights

When I think about 2014, I feel grateful for so many things. For every client, model, editor and creative collaborator. For every friend who offered an encouraging word. For every person who recommended my services. For every family member who supported me in myriad ways. For every fellow photographer who inspired me. And for you, dear readers, for following along. This past year was stimulating and wonderful and so full of experimentation and fun because of all of you. Your trust and encouragement pushed me to push myself as an artist and business owner. The momentum you've given me has carried into the present and I can't wait to see what 2015 brings. Thank you so much. Here are some of my favourite images from the past year.

I've got a few more projects from 2014 that haven't been shared yet, but I'm excited to show some peeks in the future!
