calgary family portraits | dahlman family

Today's post is in two parts, as it details one beautiful shoot with two themes that I did recently in Calgary.

I think it's fantastic when people give experiences instead of objects as gifts to the people they love. My friend Ian knew his mom had a milestone birthday approaching, so he suggested to the rest of his family that she might enjoy having some portraits done to mark this time in her life. He reached out to me asking for recommendations of photographers in Calgary, and I happily obliged. A few months later, after Ian found out I would be moving to Alberta, he asked if I would like to do her portraits. Um, absolutely!

I had met this lovely woman, Diane at Ian and Jenn's wedding in Golden, BC last summer, and I was very excited to photograph her luminous smile again. We did a two-part shoot: portraits of her on her own to celebrate this moment in her life, retired and full of energy after a very successful career as a physician. The second part of the shoot celebrated her newest role: mother-in-law and proud first-time grandmother. I began by photographing Diane alone, then she was joined by her husband, Ian and Jenn and their new baby girl.

To the Dahlman family, thank you so much for inviting me into your home and allowing me to photograph this sweet moment in your lives together. Diane, your vivaciousness and enthusiasm are contagious, and I've found myself energized since spending time with you. Congratulations on baby A-A's arrival, and I look forward to seeing more of your own photography in the future!
