this week in pictures: january 20-26, 2014

This past week was pretty damn chilly here in Madison. We woke up to frost-kissed windows every morning and listened to the wind rattle the panes every night. I loved staying inside and working long days, trying out new recipes and watching great tv shows at night. Have you seen True Detective? It's certainly dark and moody and slow-paced, but the performances are captivating and I can't get enough of its aesthetic, especially the main title sequence.

I feel like a different person during the winter than I do during the busier seasons, at least for as long as I've been spending time in Madison. My life is completely different when I'm here and when I'm back in Toronto or Montreal. Neither is better, but they are just so remarkably different. One is relaxed and meditative and at times a bit slow, while the other is jam-packed with activities and exciting/stressful. I'm looking forward to eventually living in just one city/country and reaching a kind of happy medium. For now though, I'm delighting in the differences.

Here are a few moments from this past week:

We had a brunch of champions at cozy local spot Mickey's Tavern, which included the most bedecked Bloody Mary I've ever ordered. I also went earlier in the week to spend a few hours laughing over drinks with my friend Anda. I don't know why we didn't go to this bar more often last year, but I'm planning to become a regular this time around!

And when I was feeling adventurous, I walked around in the bitter cold until my poor camera was frozen to the touch, which happened faster than I care to recall.

Blizzard skies

And of course, I'm still having fun documenting the in-between moments on Instagram (I'm @dallascurow).

Wishing you a lovely week. Stay warm!
