ali + charlie's la toundra wedding

"There's also a loud, friendly American dude with an insane video collection who passes out in his boxers sometimes."

About one week into her first year at McGill University, Ali emailed a friend of hers, describing her first impressions of campus, residence life, and Charlie, the guy who would one day become her husband.

Years later, in the heat of a July day, Ali and Charlie were married on Ile Notre Dame, a small isle just off the main island of Montreal. The sense of humour and fast friendship that characterized their first encounters and developed the foundation of their relationship were present everywhere throughout the day. They were surrounded by fun-loving family and friends, great music, laughter and excellent movie references.

From the personalized ceremony officiated by a close friend, their signature drinks that celebrated Montreal's beloved cinq à sept (happy hour) tradition, the handmade arbor crafted by Ali's father, and the groomsmen portraits that paid tribute to The Life Aquatic, individualized touches crafted the day especially for them and their loved ones. Charlie and Ali did things their own way to make people happy, make them laugh and, most importantly, to celebrate their love in their own unique style.

Ali and Charlie, thanks so much for choosing me to document your wedding celebrations. It was an honour to be there, and to laugh just as hard as your guests at your clever Arrested Development references. I wish you all the happiness in the world, and most of all I hope (and know) that you will continue being an awesome pair of best friends who know how to have fun and pull off the elusive no-look high five!

Ali and her girls got ready at Auberge de la Fontaine, a beautiful B&B at the edge of one of Parc Lafontaine.

Charlie prepared with his groomsmen and ushers at a beautiful apartment just off Montreal's Square St-Louis.

I alluded to it earlier, but Charlie and his attendants recreated the title sequence of Wes Anderson's A Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou as they travelled to Parc Lafontaine for portraits. Brian got a great workout running backwards to capture this concept for them!

Charlie and Ali shared their first look in the middle of Parc Lafontaine, which was teeming with activity and sunbathers. To me, this was a perfect location. Not only is it close to their home, but it's a place so typical of Montreal — full of people soaking up the short summer and loving life.

After their first look, we all headed to La Toundra for Ali and Charlie's ceremony and reception.

Their ceremony was officiated by our mutual friend Haider, who did an absolutely stellar job. He struck the perfect balance of humour and solemnity and definitely heightened the experience for all the guests, and especially the bride and groom. He even made the paperwork part of things hilarious.

A Lord of the Rings theme ran throughout the reception decor, with each table bearing a place name from Tolkien's series. La Toundra is a beautiful wedding venue. Its huge windows create the sensation of being right in the garden. It was a beautiful choice for Ali and Charlie, who love the outdoors and wanted their wedding to have a relaxed, natural vibe.

Their wedding had one of the most epic dance floors I've ever witnessed!
