how to choose the perfect spring lipstick

Today's post was inspired by one of my readers, who also happens to be my best friend, Jennie. She wanted some help finding a new lipstick for spring. There are so many thousands of colours to choose from, so where do you begin? While I would usually turn to runway beauty, magazines and blogs to learn about a season's hottest colours, I've decided a different approach might be a little more fun. To find the perfect tone for spring, I looked to the colours of spring itself. Here are five ideas inspired by the bouquet of different shades of ranunculus on my desk. Jennie, I suspect you'll gravitate towards one of the first two shades, but for those of you who like brighter shades, read on!

First up is an ethereal white gloss, White Gold Quartz by Yves Saint Laurent. I think this would be lovely for someone who likes just a hint of glamour without a hit of colour. You could wear it on its own for a little shimmer, or layer it over a nude shade for a bit more oomph.

Snob is one of MAC's prettiest pink shades, and a real beauty for spring. It would pair well with an oversized pair of sunglasses and a flowing maxi dress.

MAC Viva Glam Nicki 2 is a really fun lavender pink shade, developed in collaboration with rapper/singer Nicki Minaj. As with all the Viva Glam shades, all its profits go to charity. This colour would love great with a softly smudged eyeliner and a generous application of mascara.

Now we're getting into the more vibrant shades, the kind that are close to my heart. I've heard great things about Maybelline's Colorsensational Vivids. The highly pigmented collection is full of bright hues, each with a creamy finish. If you ask me, Fuchsia Flash looks just about right for your first party of the season.

Lastly, I'm perhaps most excited about this shade as its deep and saturated. From Covergirl's Queen Collection, I think the Jumbo Gloss Balm in Electric Flamingo is the perfect bright shade for deeper skin tones, though I imagine paler folks could give it a whirl too.

So there you have it! Inspiration doesn't have to be prescribed by the fashion gods; you can find it just by looking around. Now tell me, which of these shades would you guys try out for spring?
