"If you could do anything for your career, what you would you do?" I ask.

"Be a writer, or an editor," he replies, without a moment's hesitation.

It's a warm summer night and we are walking through Square St-Louis, a park in our neighbourhood. The street lights illuminate our path as we stroll a few paces behind our group of friends.

I look over at Mark and smile. "Then that's what you've got to do," I say with certainty. "That's what you'll be."

We are quickly interrupted by one of our friends, who steers us in the direction of our favourite late-night diner and we fall into excited chatter about one thing or another. Our moment folds into the activities of another summer night, but it isn't forgotten.

Not too long ago, Mark left his day job to pursue his goal of becoming a full-time writer. He's studying copyediting, writing like crazy, and working very hard every day to become the kind of writer and editor he dreams of being. My heart is filled with pride, and I get excited for each new piece he completes.

We did this portrait session to reflect who he is now, and who is becoming. Mark, I am so proud of you and everything you've accomplished this year. I'm proud to call you my friend.
