In my own career, I've taken lots of maternity portraits for expecting parents, and every time it has been a pleasure. I always love hearing about their feelings in that moment, that heady mix of jubilation and apprehension. The sensation of being on the precipice of a whole new kind of life. The joy and excitement to step into new roles. Their hopes for which parts of themselves will remain steadfast and which may be changed irrevocably.

I am feeling all of these things, but first and foremost I am feeling gratitude. The journey to parenthood is different for everyone, and families shape themselves in myriad ways. I have seen families be created by surprise, careful planning and medical intervention, adoption, surrogacy, fostering, co-parenting, and all of these families are filled with so much love. Some families are formed as blissful partnerships, groups of enviably close friendships or humans and their beloved pets. Whatever warms the world with more affection and togetherness is, in my mind, what should truly define the meaning of family.

I have always adored children and have happily embraced the role of eldest of my siblings and all my cousins, babysitter, nanny, and honourary auntie of many of my friends' sweet kids. I never, ever took it for granted that I would be able to become a mother. It's not a given, and can be a challenge for many people including myself. But our baby is on the way, I am overwhelmed by happiness and awe.

It was such a special experience to have our friend Jill Coursen take maternity portraits for us here in Edmonton. She created such beautiful work, and we are so appreciative of her talent and vision! I was also very excited to have my hair and makeup done by Astrid at Eclectica Beauty. It was such a nice treat to put myself in the hands of another artist. Thanks so much to both lovely ladies.

Here are a few of my favourite images from that gorgeous sunny evening:
